 VALENTINE’S DAY • Friday, February 14, 2014  • 7:30 pm

“Purple is the Warmest Color”

Marc Huestis presents
A Valentine’s Day Celebration of
THE COLOR PURPLE
with Oscar® Nominee Margaret Avery (“SHUG”)
Live In Person!

San Francisco, CA….This Valentine’s Day purple is the warmest color San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre as Marc Huestis presents A Valentine’s Day Celebration of “THE COLOR PURPLE”  with Oscar® nominee Margaret Avery (“Shug Avery’) live in-person.

This gala event features an interview with the star, a performance by Bebe Sweetbriar, an excerpt from the award-winning new documentary ALICE WALKER – BEAUTY IN TRUTH* introduced by director Pratibha Parmar, special surprise guests, and a rare theatrical screening of Steven Spielberg’s heartwarming classic THE COLOR PURPLE.

Nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1985, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Whoopi Goldberg) and Best Supporting Actress (Margaret Avery & Oprah Winfrey), this film about love, honor, empowerment, reinvention and redemption is perfect for both Valentines Day & African American Heritage Month. It was the debut feature film for both Goldberg (as Celie)  and Winfrey (as Sophia)-shooting both toward stardom.  Margaret Avery as Shug is the emotional center of the piece- in a performance that is both substantial and transcendent. And ultimately it is a love story between Shug and Celie, well before its time in showing tenderness and sensuality between 2 women.

Event sponsors include Twin Peaks Tavern, Galleria Park Hotel &  Joie de Vivre Hospitality.

A One-Night Only Comedy Event Starring Miss Coco Peru (aka Clinton Leupp)
In Her Brand New Comedy Show!

San Francisco, CA… Hold onto your…hats! COMING- NOV. 9-11 • CASTRO THEATRE

MARC HUESTIS AND CASTRO THEATRE PRESENT  NATALIE WOOD TRIBUTE!

San Francisco, California —From Friday, November 9 through Sunday, November 11, 2012, the Castro Theatre will present Forever Natalie Wood, a full weekend of screenings and special events celebrating the life and work of San Francisco native and three-time Academy Award nominee Natalie Wood.

Renowned impresario Marc Huestis and special guests will honor this beloved movie icon over the packed three-day event which features eight classic Natalie Wood films, including some of her most rarely screened works, and a special sing along presentation of WEST SIDE STORY.

The centerpiece event of the weekend on Saturday, November 10 will pay tribute to the beautiful and talented Natalie Wood with candid remembrances by one who knew her well — her sister Lana Wood. Lana (who also starred as Plenty O’Toole in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER) will sit down for a rare on-stage interview, of which she says, “will be an honest, open discussion, personal and completely truthful. No holds barred.” This gala event also includes a tribute clip reel honoring the screen legend, a performance by Connie Champagne, special surprises, and a screening of Elia Kazan’s 1961 powerful drama SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, alongside Warren Beatty, for which Natalie received one of her three Academy Award nominations.

The weekend’s screenings highlight the scope of Natalie Wood’s esteemed career: Nicolas Ray’s smoldering REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE with James Dean and Sal Mineo, paired with THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED, co-starring Robert Redford; a 50th anniversary screening of the musical classic GYPSY, hosted by Matthew Martin as Mama Rose, paired with a rare screening of LOVE WITH A PROPER STRANGER, co-starring Steve McQueen; and the film that ushered in the swinging ‘70s, BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE, paired with INSIDE DAISY CLOVER, also co-starring Robert Redford.

“We are thrilled to be able to host what is going to be an amazing special event,” said Keith Arnold, Film Programmer of the Castro Theatre. “San Francisco was a special home to Natalie Wood and she always took pride in the city that she loved. We’re honored to cherish her memory at the Castro Theatre, and to offer a rare opportunity to see her light up the Castro’s glorious big screen.” He added, “For Natalie Wood fans, and those just discovering her, this is an event not to be missed.”
